– Day 1: Saturday, July 22 –

On the first day, you will arrive at JAL and head straight to Izumo Taisha, one of the oldest and most important Shinto shrines in Japan. Here, you will have the opportunity to learn about the spiritual history of Japan and the significance of the shrine, all while being guided by a storyteller who can explain everything in English.

What is Izumo Taisha?

Izumo Taisha, or Izumo Grand Shrine, is one of Japan’s most ancient and significant Shinto shrines. Located in Shimane Prefecture, it is dedicated to the deity Okuninushi, known as the god of nation-building, farming, business, and medicine. The exact founding date of Izumo Taisha is unknown, but it is mentioned in Japan’s earliest written texts, the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki, dating back to the 8th century. The shrine’s unique architectural style, known as Taisha-zukuri, is considered the oldest shrine architectural style in Japan. Izumo Taisha is also renowned for its annual gathering of Shinto deities from across the country in October, known as Kamiarizuki, making it a center of spirituality and a must-visit for anyone interested in Shinto traditions and the mystical aspects of Japan.

Stay in Historic Kura

After visiting Izumo Taisha, you will travel to Okuizumo and experience life in the countryside. At Kurayado Uzumaki(Warehouse stay Uzumaki), you will have a unique opportunity to harvest vegetables for your dinner and even prepare an onsen bath in the traditional way, just like the locals do. This experience will give you a taste of the simple, rustic lifestyle that is still very much a part of rural Japan.

What is Okuizumo?

“Oku” in Okuizumo means “deep” in Japanese. Venture into Okuizumo, where the whispering winds carry tales of ancient legends and age-old craftsmanship. It’s a place where mythology and reality converge, home to the Yamata no Orochi legend, a dramatic battle between a god and an eight-headed serpent. But there’s more than just myths. Okuizumo also nurtures a deep-rooted tradition of “tatara,” a thousand-year-old Japanese iron-making technique. This quaint town is a living museum, where the echoes of the past still resonate in the daily life, offering a unique lens to view Japan’s cultural richness and historical depth. Step into Okuizumo, step into the heart of Japan’s heritage.

What is Goemonburo?

The “Goemonburo” is a traditional Japanese bath named after Ishikawa Goemon, a legendary thief from the 16th century. This type of bath consists of a large iron or steel pot, filled with water, and heated from below by a fire. The bath is known for its deep, round shape, which allows bathers to immerse up to their shoulders. To prevent burns, wooden planks are placed at the bottom. This provides a uniquely rustic bathing experience where one can enjoy the natural warmth of fire-heated water, reflecting an important aspect of traditional Japanese lifestyle.

Amenities at Kurayado Uzumaki

Kurayado Uzumaki provides only the essential amenities, which include a bamboo toothbrush, toothpaste tablets, shampoo, conditioner, body soap, towels, and a hairdryer. Please note that no disposable items are provided in an effort to reduce waste. We encourage guests to bring any additional items they might need.

Sleepwear is not provided, so guests are kindly asked to bring their own. The bamboo toothbrush provided is designed to be taken home for further use to promote sustainable practices.

Kurayado Uzumaki features Western-style toilets equipped with advanced bidet functions. While preserving traditional Japanese living environments, we welcome you with the latest comfortable amenities.

– Day 2: Sunday, July 23, 2023 –

What is Tatara?

Tatara

The name ‘Tatara’ is notably tied to the traditional Japanese method of iron smelting. This ancient technique, dating back over a millennium, produced high-quality ‘tamahagane’ steel, which was then used to craft the revered Japanese swords. Today, the tradition persists as local craftsmen meticulously forge ‘Tatara’ knives, embodying the region’s centuries-old artisan spirit.

This legacy of craft extends to Okuizumo’s culinary scene. The region is famed for its ‘soba’ culture, soba being buckwheat noodles, a staple of Japanese cuisine. Tatara’s soba is renowned for its unique, wholesome flavor, attributed to the area’s pure mountain waters and the dedication of local soba artisans. Each noodle is hand-cut, exhibiting the same attention to detail seen in the creation of Tatara’s knives.

In essence, Tatara is a testament to Japan’s cultural richness, from the narrative of its mythology to the tangible elegance of its craftsmanship, both culinary and metallurgical. A visit to Tatara is a journey through time, offering an appreciation for the care and precision that symbolizes Japan’s enduring artisan heritage.

Overall, this two-day tour in Izumo and Okuizumo is a perfect way to experience the roots of Japanese culture and immerse yourself in the daily life of rural Japan. You’ll learn about the history and traditions of the region, participate in unique cultural experiences, and gain a deeper understanding of the Japanese way of life.
