Japan offers several options for those looking to visit traditional villages that preserve the olden times. Among the most famous are Shirakawa-go in Gifu Prefecture and Gokayama in Toyama Prefecture, both located in central Honshu. However, if your starting point is in Eastern Japan, especially Tokyo, Ouchi-juku presents itself as an excellent alternative. Despite its somewhat remote location, traveling with a licensed English-speaking guide ensures a smooth and worry-free visit. Please note that the guide will be on foot, so any use of buses or taxis should be discussed with the guide in advance. Additionally, Ouchi-juku is blanketed in snow from December to early March, providing a splendid opportunity to experience a picturesque snowy landscape.
