In commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the birth of Kaishu Katsu (1823-1899), a key figure of the late Edo period, the Ota Tourism Association in Tokyo has planned the “Kaishu Katsu: A Journey Through His Life” monitor tour. The tour will take participants to places associated with Kaishu Katsu’s life. The tour dates are August 24th and September 28th, with the application deadline on the 21st.
During the tour, you will visit various locations connected to Kaishu Katsu’s life, including:
- The birthplace in Sumida-ku Ryogoku
- Ueno Onshi Park (Taito-ku), where a statue of Takamori Saigo, with whom Kaishu had discussions during the Boshin War, is located
- “Shotoen” (Ota-ku), a famous garden with the “Meeting Monument” commemorating Kaishu and Takamori’s bloodless surrender of Edo Castle
- “Ota-ku Kaishu Katsu Memorial Hall” (Ota-ku), which showcases items related to Kaishu Katsu
A knowledgeable guide will accompany the tour, providing insights into the historical facts related to each spot.
How to Apply:
- Apply through the Ota Tourism Association (Tokyo) website’s application form or by sending a reply-paid postcard.
- The tour has a maximum capacity of 30 participants per day, and if there are many applicants, a lottery will be conducted.
- The tour fee is 9,800 yen (including tax).
